This is what you can expect at your piercing appointment:
At the start of the appointment, the nurse will asses your ears. Next, a surgical-grade skin marker will be used to mark the spot on your ear where the piercing will go. Once you confirm the placement, your ear will be sterilized and pierced.
Before the appointment is over, the nurse will make sure you have all the knowledge and products you need to care for your new piercing.
TIMING
The best time to pierce your baby’s ears is when they are happy and calm,
usually right after eating and a nap. Scheduling an appointment that works with your baby’s routine will help ensure a fun and stress-free experience for your baby and you!
DISTRACTIONS
Distractions are key for older babies and toddlers. Please have their favorite
toy or stuffed animal handy to keep them entertained and happy during the appointment.
For younger babies, pacifies, bottles, and/or breastfeeding are all great ways to distract from the sensations they will feel while prepping and piercing their ears.
BE READY TO FEED YOUR BABY RIGHT AFTER THE PIERCING
Babies are developmentally designed to be comforted by having something
in their mouths, typically a food source or pacifier. Preparing to nurse or
bottle feed your baby right after the piercing will calm your baby and distract
them from any minor discomfort they may be experiencing.
EXTRA HANDS ARE A PLUS
Having a second person present, who your baby is familiar and comfortable
with, can be especially helpful to hold and distract your baby during the appointment.
You may use a topical numbing cream if it will make you feel more comfortable. You can use any over the counter lidocaine cream sold in your local pharmacy. Please apply it at least 30 minutes before the appointment as it takes time to begin working.
You may use ice as a numbing agent too. As the nurse sets up and begin the marking process, you may hold ice to your ear lobes to numb them. Be sure the ice is not held directly on the skin, rather keep it wrapped in a towel.
For babies, icing the ears is more uncomfortable and lasts longer than the piercing itself, so it is better to not bother them with icing.
It is normal to experience the following:
Signs of infection include:
During the first 6 weeks of your healing process, if you experience any complications with your piercings or have any concerns, feel free to reach out.
Make sure that you are cleaning your new piercing two to three times daily. The more you clean, the better your ears will heal! Always wash your hands before touching the piercing, only use saline solution and avoid rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, and creams such as Neosporin or Bacitracin.

If you experience symptoms such as excessive swelling or discharge, fever, area warm to the touch, extreme pain, or any symptoms that don’t improve over time, please reach out to your health care provider.
Please reach out if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Toddlers have an increased risk of infecting their new piercings because they may frequently touch their ears with dirty hands and attempt to pull out their earrings. It may also be challenging for them to sit still during the piercing process. My goal is safety and precision! Of course exceptions can be made on a case-by-case basis, depending on the temperament of the child and the parents dedication to proper post-piercing ear care.
The healing time for a piercing varies depending on the individual. Generally, piercing studs must be worn continuously for 6-8 weeks and must be cleaned at least twice a day during this time. A piercing can take up to a year to heal completely, so it is important to wear hypoallergenic nickel-free earrings during the first year to minimize the chance of developing an allergy to nickel.
The Blomdahl piercing device uses a sterile set of sharp piercing studs to ensure safe and precise piercing of the ear. I offer a choice of medical grade plastic or surgical grade titanium earrings to my clients. Blomdahl's piercing method and earrings are designed to prevent allergic reactions to nickel and minimize the risk of infection, ensuring the highest level of safety and comfort for my clients.
Yes! I offer an optional 6-8 week follow up visit. I will remove your piercing studs, cleanse your piercings thoroughly, and gently insert a new pair of Blomdahl earrings. Cost for post-care visit: $45 plus the cost of the earrings you choose.
Yes! I carry a limited number of popular earring designs made by Blomdahl. Please check with me regarding my inventory of in-stock designs.
